This was my first assignment that I did for the college which was to make a 2D platformer, I basically blocked out the level with tiles as the whole game is in 2D.

The programs I used to make my 2d Platformer:

Game Engine: Unity

Tile Map: Pyxel Edit

Sprite Animations: Piskel

Backgrounds and Fonts: Photoshop

I blocked out my level with good old fashioned pencil and paper with a little colouring for good measure this was my first version of level design as you can see below:

A little too simple to understand plus it didn't show any actual platforming just the the rooms themselves where some have obstacles and others have treasure.

This block out is much better because it shows what each room is like in terms of platforming as you can see below:

This is my final version

Here is some game play of the finished version with no commentary:

This video explains the game design of room lord:

Key Features:

  • Old school platforming all the way down to the pixel art style

  • Optional paths leading to other collectibles but protected by tougher obstacles

  • Deadly spikes and cannons to overcome

  • Can be played by keyboard or gamepad

From a game design point of view the game controls needed to feel fair so that if you die then that's your fault and not because of bad mechanics or poor level design also adding optional paths increases replay-ability.
